Novelty of the Approach—and Obstacles

The benefits of triple chronotherapy are obvious and great, but what about the costs? Like anything new, triple chronotherapy involves some adaptations. It calls for some changes in hospital routine and places some additional responsibilities on the staff. But these adaptations are far fewer, less intrusive, and less expensive than those that almost any other new medical technology would impose. Specifically, setting up a triple chronotherapy inpatient treatment program would mean:

Reserving some space in the hospital unit or in an off-site facility where patients can sleep or stay awake at unusual times of day.

Providing, or expanding, facilities such as libraries, computer rooms, and exercise rooms, so that those doing wake therapy have something to do during those long nighttime hours.

Serving meals at non-standard, individualized times that fit the unusual schedules of the patients.

Training the staff, especially the night staff, to promote the wake therapy with conversation, coaching, encouragement, offers of snacks and caffeinated drinks, and careful vigilance to make sure the patient stays awake.
